Library Announces 2022 SaratogaREADS! Selections

Saratoga Springs Public Library is pleased to announce that, by popular vote of the community, The Overstory by Richard Powers is the 2022 SaratogaREADS! selection.

In Powers’ epic and immensely readable ecological novel, people from multiple generations have extraordinary personal, emotional, and political encounters with trees. These encounters provide a window into the hidden and not-so-hidden ways that trees are inextricably connected to one another, and to us. Combining timely and fascinating science, vivid characters, masterful storytelling, and beautiful writing, The Overstory, which won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, is certain to spark many conversations about the urgent need to pay attention to our natural surroundings.

The Overstory is available from the Saratoga Springs Public Library in multiple formats: hardcover, paperback, eBook, and eAudiobook.

A slate of programs inspired by this year’s selection is currently in the planning stages and can be expected in April – please check back at our Events page, or subscribe to the library’s newsletter to keep up-to-date.

The 2022 SaratogaREADS! Jr. selection is El Deafo, a graphic novel written and drawn by Cece Bell, about the author’s childhood deafness, and the superpowers she acquires along with her hearing aids. A powerful and entertaining story of learning to accept and revel in one’s differences, El Deafo was a Newbery Honor Book, and won the Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids. It inspired a series of lively SaratogaREADS-hosted conversations in February, 2022, and has been adapted as an animated mini-series by Apple TV.

“What these selections have in common,” said Library Director Issac Pulver, “is a clarion call to listen closely to the world around us, in a time when important voices are struggling to be heard. These selections are sure to inspire discussions of issues that are important aspects of our ongoing institutional focus on sustainability, particularly climate change and inclusion, in a way that is as entertaining as it is informative”

Community events and programming surrounding SaratogaREADS! can be expected in April – please check back at our Events page, the library’s calendar of events, or subscribe to the library’s newsletter or various social media channels to keep up-to-date.
