Previously, he was chief of Detroit bureau of the Times and a reporter covering investing. His assignments for the Times have taken him to an Indiana camp for Hummer aficionados, to the Michigan hunting preserve of the rock guitarist Ted Nugent, and into the deep thicket of General Motors’ financial statements and the New York State budget. Before coming to the Times in 2000, Hakim was a financial reporter for SmartMoney.com and a police reporter for the Greenville News in South Carolina. He started his career as a copy aide at the Washington Post. Born in Norfolk, Va., Hakim graduated from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md., with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.
